Integrated fridges were first introduced in the 1950s, when fully-fitted kitchens started to be mass-produced and ceased to be the preserve of people who could afford custom-built kitchens.

The modern, smooth lines of 1950s appliances lent themselves well to the fitted style, and it was a natural extension of the fitted-kitchen concept to integrate appliances such as fridges and cookers into cupboards and worktops wherever possible.

As smaller and more modern larder fridges gained popularity, it became possible to slide a fridge underneath a kitchen worktop, into a gap between two cupboards. Upmarket kitchen fitters soon realised that by adding a panel of veneer to the front of the fridge, it was possible to give the impression that it was just another cupboard, creating a sleek and elegant style for the kitchen.

Integrated fridges have continued to grow in popularity and it is now possible to buy fridges that are designed to be integrated, with completely flat doors designed to have a cupboard door finish applied to them.

Modern integrated fridges often have a small freezer or 0º C chiller compartment in them – whether this is appropriate for you depends on your lifestyle and whether you have a full-sized freezer as well. Chiller compartments are useful for keeping ready meals fresh, and a small freezer compartment can be useful if you don't have a dedicated freezer, or if it is in another room, some distance from your kitchen.

Most integrated fridges are designed to fit underneath a kitchen worktop, but it is also possible to get full-height integrated fridges which are ideal for fitting at against a kitchen wall – such fridges often have doors that can be hinged on either left or right, so that the door can always be opened easily, even in a narrow space.
